Trial-And-Error Entrepreneurship

I stumbled into business ownership.

My experience achieving a doctorate, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels at a university, and years of real-life experiences did not prepare me for this.

This was not in my five-year plan.

There’s a pretty good chance that you are in the same boat.

You started your business because you love the field or you have an awesome skill set, or both. Management and teaching how to communicate with others have been my life’s calling.

But it’s more unlikely that you started the business because you love running a business.

I’ve spent years learning on the job and in the classroom, very often with a plan and a very specific intention.

Starting a business, though, was a reality that I didn’t see coming.

I was not adequately prepared for things like 1099 forms, business insurance, niche-ing, or SEO, and when starting out it feels like you have to be good at everything and all at once.

As an entrepreneur – whether you are new to business ownership or have been doing this for a while – you have to wear so many, many hats!

I’ve had to learn a lot of lessons the hard way. Trial and error, followed by a few more errors, inserted swear words, calls to friends and mentors, and another trial or two before I reached my solution.

Even though I see it all the time on TV and in movies, I haven’t had a lot of those lightbulb moments.

You know, where a lightbulb comes on above your favorite character and suddenly they have all the answers?

Nope, none here.

There have been plenty of days that I wanted to stay in bed with the covers over my head, waiting until I felt more equipped to face my challenge-of-the-day.

You can learn so much through time and experience while running a business.

However, you may also get to a point when you don’t have time or energy to learn the hard way.

I talk to business owners and managers every day. As they tell me the challenges they face time and time again, they are looking for answers that:

1. Are proven to work

2. They can start using right away

You want and need a shortcut: Something to help accelerate your learning and get you to the end result without the pain, suffering, and sleepless nights.
